                       KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

In this day and age of technology and great science the general understanding of
addictive disorders across this country has grown little.  A disease that has been
considered as one of this countries largest preventable health risks remains largely
considered to be poor choices or a moral weakness.  This view is simply
not true!
The fact is that addictive disorders are a combination of key components that
contribute to an individuals susceptibility and the onset of the disease process.

Science has known for a long time that the majority of people who suffer from
addictive disorders have a "predisposition" a family history of substance
abuse/addiction, perhaps mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder or
anxiety disorder etc.  Another key component is environment, the environment
impacts child development significantly or at the root level brain development that
plays a significant part in perception of self and reality, or an individuals identity.

The term that so many people struggle with, "disease" is a simple term really.  It can
be defined as a "morbid process of the body" meaning any thing that effects an
organ(s), system or cognitive process in a negative way.  It can also be defined at a
deeper level: a "chronic (long term)" "progressive (if untreated always gets worse)"
symptomatic (a general set of symptoms that can be applied across a population),
"primary (not caused by another illness or a secondary condition)".  Addiction is a
primary, chronic, symptomatic and progressive illness.

The use of psychoactive substances used regularly and over a period of time cause
known changes in brain chemistry and brain function and affect the ability of the
brain to regulate and integrate.  These changes in the brains function are radical
and significant and can also be very long term and some irreversible.
